For my mom’s birthday this year, I decided to be as creative, crafty, and coordinated as possible. Imagine picking one of those DIY projects from Pinterest and trying your hand at it. As all of those projects go, it didn’t exactly turn out perfectly. But moms never really care, right?
The original idea was I love you with all of my senses gifts. Meaning, there was a gift box correlated to each of the five senses. Believe it or not, no matter how much I scoured Pinterest, it was HARD to find a handful of gifts for every sense! I mean, really, how many sound-related gifts can you think of off the top of your head?? (Especially ones that aren’t wildly expensive – aka nice headphones.)
I did end up finding a few for every sense, some more than others. But honestly, it just looked too uneven. Some boxes looked stuffed, while others looked depressingly sparse. So I switched up the plan a little bit.
I narrowed it down to three boxes and labeled them The Beauty, The Goods, and The Food, and all of the gifts could find into those categories. I constructed cardboard boxes from Target and filled them with shredded paper box filler from Michael’s. I wrote on the terra cotta pot using a paint marker, then used the same marker to right out “Mom” on the individual tags. After I spray painted the three clear mason jars, I tied the labeled tags around the neck of the each jar.
I organized fake flowers in the labeled mason jars, filled the boxes with the correlated gifts, then wrapped and labeled all three of them. After all the gifts were done, I decorated the rest of the space with cake, balloons, and note cards with silly birthday / mom comments written on them. (Such as, “you’re not 50 – you’re 25 with 25 years of experience” or “Mom, thanks for dealing with all of our tantrums – from preschool through high school”.)
I hope this serves as some source of inspiration for your next gift giving opportunity! Especially for people as sentimental as our moms. I know my mama still has her mason jar flowers set up in her house. (:
